Des Geraghty is a well known trade unionist, writer, broadcaster and current affairs commentator. He is the former General President of SIPTU, Ireland's largest trade union and a former member of the European Parliament and the RTE Authority. He is a regular contributer to radio and television programmes in both Irish and English on economics, industrial relations and social and cultural topics. He has worked as both information and communications officer and editor of the journal 'Liberty' for the ITGWU. He was also a member of the National Union of Journalists. In recent years he has served as the independent chairman of the Irish Print and Packaging Forum and he is currently Chairman of The Affordable Homes Partnership and a member of the board of FÁS, the industrial training authority. Des was recently awarded an honary Doctor of Laws by Ollscoil na hÉireann, UCD, for his notable contribution to public affairs and social partnership in Ireland.
