Dick O'Riordan joined the Irish Press group directly from O'Connell Schools, Dublin, in 1961 as a trainee journalist. As part of his training he attended the College of Commerce, Rathmines. He trained as a subeditor with the Irish Press newspaper and then joined the Evening Press where he became assistant editor in charge of production in 1971. He transferred to the Irish Press newspaper in 1987 as senior deputy editor and returned to the Evening Press in 1991 as editor, a position he held until the group's collapse in 1995. He was then involved as editor in the setting up of the all-electronic The Leader weekly newpaper and this led to to the formation of the high-tech daily Evening News, which foundered after 14 weeks. He joined The Sunday Business Post in 1997as chief sub editor, a position from which he recently retired. He has also edited books and magazines and wrote extensively on travel for 15 years. His has written an opera and classical music column for the The Sunday Business Post for ten years
