Fergus Finaly   Joe Mulholland has had a long and distinguished career in broadcasting and journalism which has spanned the whole spectrum from television programme production to senior positions in management. He founded one of the most successful nightly current affairs programmes on Irish television, TODAY TONIGHT, of which he was editor 1980-6. As Controller of TV Productions he was responsible for increasing the level of home produced programme output and as Director of News for introducing a whole range of new technological developments.
On the international front, he was a contributor on Irish affairs to the French newspaper, Le Monde, for over twenty years. As RTE’s Director of News, he was elected Chairman of the News Group of the European Broadcasting Union in 1995. In 1980, Dr. Mulholland founded with a local committee the Patrick MacGill Summer School in his native Donegal to honour Glenties writer, Patrick MacGill. The school, held annually in Glenties, has become one of Ireland’s most important fora and brings together annually leading public figures to analyse and debate social, economic and cultural issues of national importance. In 2006, he was appointed to the position of Chairman of the Board of NCAD and he was named the 2008 Donegal Person of the Year.
