Mike Burns was born in Leicester, England, and reared in Ballintubber, Co. Roscommon.
He has served as a reporter on local newspapers in Ireland and Britain and on daily and Sunday newspapers in both countries. He entered broadcasting in 1963 when he joined RTÉ in Dublin, covering home and international news.
In November, 1968, he became the founding editor (with Seán Duignan) of RTE Radio's This Week, News at One-Thirty and World Report programmes.
He later became RTÉ Assistant Controller of Programmes - Radio and then Assistant Director of News – Radio, before returning to Britain as RTÉ’s London Editor.
He retired from RTÉ in 1992 to set up his own company Media Information Services, publisher of Ireland's only all-island media contacts' directory. Since 1992 he has acted as Media Advisor to the British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body (now the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly) and a number of Irish and international businesses.
In 2002 he was awarded the MBE by Queen Elizabeth 11 "for services to British-Irish relations".
